Corn In Your Tank

The election victory by Barack Obama last week could have a big impact on the cars and trucks we buy in the future, and the kind of gas we purchase at the pumps. President-Elect Obama wants to sharply increase the amount of gas in the U.S. blended with ethanol made from corn. He also wants all U.S. made cars in four years be "flex-fuel," which means capable of running on 85% ethanol. more

Food or Fuel?

Illinois Plant Produces Alternate Fuel

A common objection to biomass energy production is that it could divert agricultural production away from food crops in a hungry world -- even leading to mass starvation in the poor countries.

True or not?

Not true: at best it's an oversimplification of a complex issue. It just doesn't work that way, and neither does hunger. more

Understanding Oil Prices...more

Oil prices are a confusing subject for most consumers. At times, the prices seem to go up or down for no particular reason. The explanation for this is simple: the supply and demand of petroleum is always changing based on a variety of factors. In this story, we'll try to quickly explain how the market works and how it affects gas prices.

Kick the Oil Habit

Hooked on Oil

While domestic oil production peaked in the 1970s, consumption continues to grow at break-neck speed. In 2025 the U.S. is projected to consume 28.3 million barrels a day -- 44 percent more oil than we do today, with domestic production meeting a mere 30 percent of that need. aoilpolicy2

America spends more than $200,000 per minute on foreign oil -- $13 million per hour. More than $25 billion a year goes for Persian Gulf imports alone. This NRDC analysis considers oil demand and supply projections and how our current policy of oil dependence effects our economy and security.

The United States is being looted by the international oil cartel. By restricting production in the face of growing world demand, OPEC has raised the price of oil twelvefold in the past ten years. In consequence, U.S. tribute for foreign oil this ear will exceed $650 billion, total American oil payments will be $1.1 trillion, and humanity worldwide will be squeezed for nearly $4.5 trillion. This massive tax is sending the US and other industrial countries into a global depression. more
